A Slidell man shot and killed two pit bulls he said were attacking his dog Tuesday afternoon.
Slidell Police Lieutenant Ray Dupuy said the mans dog, a mix of Labrador and Rotweiler was badly injured in the attack and was at a local animal hospital.
According to Dupuy, the man came home and found the pit bulls attacking his animal in the backyard. The man said he tried to separate the animals and went in to get his pistol when it appeared the animals would turn on him.
Dupuy said the man went back outside and tried once again to separate the animals before shooting the pit bulls. One of the animals died on the scene, the other managed to return to his home, where he later died.
Dupuy said police cited the pit bulls owner for not having their animals properly housed. The man who shot the dogs was not cited.
